Name Origination:
The south slope has a series of bluffs known as Chalk Cliffs. The name was believed to be given by Henry Gannett, one of four students of Professor Josiah Dwight Whitney on a climbing survey, investigating the rumor that peaks in Colorado were higher than those of California.
